![]() ![]() I added six pine needle branches to my branch. Pine Needles:įirst, let’s add the pine needles. To add the snow you will need white acrylic paint. To finish off our painting we are going to add pine needles to our tree branch and snow to the top of the branch as well as in the sky. All you have to do is use the Brown paint we mixed up earlier to fill in the tree branch underneath the cardinal. Let this blue background completely dry before moving on. Using the picture below as a guide, leave a section clean and white for the tree branch the bird will be resting on. Start farther away then blend a lighter color right next to the cardinal. Then mix together an even wash of Magnesium Blue paint and begin painting it all around the cardinal. We are now going to add a wintery background to our cardinal painting!įill up the entire area around the cardinal with clean water. Then with the tip of your brush add a thin line down the middle of the beak. Step 5:Īll we need to do for this step is fill in the remaining area of the bird’s face with a slightly light wash of Payne’s Gray paint. ![]() ![]() Make sure the eye and beak have completely dried before moving on to the next step. Lastly, for this step use that same Payne’s Gray paint to fill in the legs and feet. Then using the same brush (cleaned off) fill in the eye with a dark mixture of Payne’s Gray. Switch over to your small detail brush and begin filling in the bird’s beak with an even wash of Burnt Sienna. While we let the feathers dry we are going to start adding detail to the face. The legs and feet are just a slanted line with a curved line at the bottom of it.Ĭheck out the full video tutorial at the end of this post to see this drawing tutorial explained in real-time. Lastly, for the bird’s wing, start right underneath where the body’s circle begins then draw a curved “carrot” shape for the wing. Then draw a line down the middle of the beak. The beak should start a little bit above the center of the bird’s head, then end a little below the center. Then draw a small circle area for the eye, then continue down to the neck area. Start right under the “triangle shape” added to the top of the bird’s head and create a jagged line decline toward the center of the bird’s head. Now we are going to draw the facial details and feathers to our cardinal. The last two random shapes we are going to add before we add some detail are a semi-circle at the bottom of our body, Then add a tale shape coming off the top part of that semi-circle ( use the picture below as a guide). Then connect the head and the body with a curved line in the front and back of the head. Next, draw a larger circle under the head toward the left side of the circle we drew for the head. The top part of the cardinal’s head should start in the middle of the left side of the bird’s head, then it should blend into the front of the head. Start by drawing a circle for the head, then divide it into fours. I highly recommend this product to you if you are looking for a beginner set of paints.
